Certificate and Diploma Programs
The
Women’s Studies Certificate Program is an interdisciplinary approach to
research and scholarship that draws on various disciplines, while challenging
disciplinary boundaries, raising new questions and offering different perspectives.
The general aim of the program is to offer critical reflection on the
experiences of both women and men in terms of differences of gender, sexuality,
race, class, ethnicity and nation. Particular attention is paid to the
conditions of women’s lives and the varied forms of struggle to which these
give rise. Students are prepared to teach courses and to do research in Women’s
Studies and related critical approaches to the disciplines. Besides focused
coursework and guidance in research, Women’s Studies offers participation in a
wide range of graduate student-faculty activities, such as lecture series and
forums. Students are also invited to participate in the research programs of
the Center for the Study of Women and Society.
Students who would like to join the Certificate Program should fill out an Application Form. This allows you to become part of our email lists and get updates and information about the program. We recommend students start Women’s Studies Certificate Program coursework before the year of their Master degree program and as soon as possible in their Bachelors's program. Prospective students are encouraged to stop by the office or contact the Director of Studies to discuss their programs and interests.
The Department
of Gender Studies meets the growing demand for expertise in gender issues by
providing both Master's and doctoral level programs in gender studies, as well
as serving as a base for non-degree studies and other activities in the field.
The department attracts students from a wide range of disciplines in the social
sciences and the humanities, and focuses on integrative and comparative
approaches in gender studies. A rich variety of intertwined scholarly interests
(such as gender and (post) state-socialist studies, nationalism, theory,
cultural studies, transnationalism, and international political movements) are
emphasized. With an important, but not exclusive, focus on Central and Eastern
Europe, both the Master's and doctoral programs seek to contribute to the
development of socially relevant knowledge based on these approaches, and to
critically interrogate past and present developments related to gender in
culture and society.
